"The twentieth century was the first time in the history of human culture when popular culture had become professionalized, and when the people were taught to defer to the professional"
Following Lessig's argument that digital technology is letting people back into culture, and necessitates a different legislative approach to copyright is (surprisingly) less preachy and (pleasantly) more balanced than I was expecting.
The debate on how artists (broadly used here to mean anyone who creates art or culture, particularly focusing on those who would like to make a living off it) can earn a crust from their creations is refreshingly optimistic.
The book is available (for free) online
